WHAT IS EBOOKBUDDY?
eBookBuddy is a free, online, after-school program for elementary students in need of reading support, where students read with a dedicated volunteer 2-3 times per week in 30-minute sessions via a secure, monitored online meeting platform. Students and volunteers who are paired together stay together for the duration of the program so that they have ample opportunity to grow a strong rapport, so that the student can see the best benefits of reading in relationship towards the improvement of their literacy as well as other benefits, such as growing conversation skills, English language use, and more. Volunteers also love getting to bond with their student, with many volunteers calling meeting with their buddy the highlight of their week!
Session Snapshot
In each 30-minute weekly reading session, students and their reading buddies engage in friendly conversation and read an ebook (or several!) together. Students and volunteers take part in Guided Reading and use the Before-During-After reading model to best support the student’s reading success, grow the student’s reading skills, model proven reading strategies, and create a Shared Reading Experience. As students and their buddies take part in conversation about the text, opportunities abound for growing vocabulary knowledge, comprehension, and English language usage.
Reading platform
eBookBuddy uses the online reading platform, Epic!, as a resource for a wide assortment of colorful, leveled, engaging ebooks to be shared by our young readers and their reading buddies. In each session, students and volunteers can explore book choices together and find books of interest that the student will enjoy. This room for choice allows students to find the books that will make their love for reading come alive!
